     Help Themselves

Our Saviour's Lutheran Church is a member of Faith in Community, FIC, a community organizing effort helping people help themselves end the pain within their communities.  FIC is made up of 20 congregations and faith-based organizations in Fresno representing 10,000 families.  FIC is an affiliate of People Improving Community through Organizing, PICO.  PICO has 153 affiliates like FIC through out the nation, from Alaska to Florida - California to New York.  As part of PICO, FIC has been involved in health care issues concerning children.  SB 437, eliminating the requirement that parents re-register their children for Healthy Families or MediCal when their children moved from  MediCal to Healthy Families or Healthy Families to MediCal saved an estimated 80,000 children from losing their health insurance.   This happened because 5000 members of the PICO affiliates in California, 19 organizations in all, met with members of the California legislature and Govenor Schwarzenegger's staff in Sacramento demanding that health coverage be afforded all children.  In March PICO affiliates from through out the U. S. will meet with members of the Congress and the Senate to urge their representative to fund SCHIP.  For more information on SCHIP follow this link to PICO.
